SIT Velodrome to host new track series
Cycling New Zealand has announced a new national track series to further develop its burgeoning young riders.
The Subway National Track Series, with three rounds in Invercargill and Cambridge, will provide competition for young riders, predominantly from the Subway sponsored Regional Performance Hubs and other leading Under-17, Under-19 and Under-23 emerging riders.
Cycling New Zealand junior national track coach and the Grassroots Trust Waikato/BOP Performance Hub coach, Jon Andrews said the series will be an important development tool in allowing riders to further develop tactical and technical awareness on the track and in workshops.
The series will also provide a platform for coaches to share experiences, knowledge and skills to develop their young riders.
“Our young elite riders do not get many opportunities to compete against each other especially in bunch races, something that is almost commonplace for young riders in Europe particularly,” said Andrews.
“This Subway National Track Series will be an important opportunity to grow the depth in our domestic riders as well as for those riders who strive to move into the elite ranks. Likewise it will provide a great opportunity for the public to see this exciting racing from our future champions.”
Subway New Zealand, who sponsor Cycling New Zealand’s Regional Performance Hubs Programme, are also backing this new series.
“We’re thrilled to be sponsoring the new Subway National Track Series, which will provide opportunities for young riders across New Zealand to grow and showcase their skills,” said Marissa Brennan, Brand Marketing Manager, Subway New Zealand.
“We’ve been a proud sponsor of Cycling New Zealand’s Regional Performance Hubs Programme for the past two years. We love being able to support local people in their communities.”
Events have been specifically designed to support the objectives of the series and include some exciting versions of Olympic events including the madison, elimination, keirin and sprint.
The first in the series will be staged at the SIT Zero Fees Velodrome in Invercargill on 1-3 June with the other two rounds to be held at the Avantidrome in Cambridge on 13-15 July and 24 -26 August.
