There were many notable achievements for Southland schools during last week’s NZ Secondary Schools Summer tournament week.
Josh Burnett, from Southland Boys' High School, kicked off the week by winning the U20 title at the NZSS Mountain Biking Champs.
Southland Boys' followed up that success by winning the NZ Div 2 Softball Champs in Ashburton and gained a fourth at the SI Touch Champs, which was enough to qualify for the NZ Champs in December.
Central Southland College gained a third placing which guarantees qualification for the NZ Champs as well.
Southland Girls' High School also had a successful week with Shakira Mirfin winning Maadi Cup rowing gold in the U16 Girls single sculls, as well as a silver in the U17 age group, a huge achievement considering the highly competitive standard at Maadi Cup.
Wakatipu High School gained two Maadi Cup medals, silver in the U15 Double Sculls and a bronze in the U15 Coxed Quad.
Kennedy Taylor, from Southland Girls', also won a New Zealand title in the U13 girls NZ triathlon.
