Lenize Potgieter: my journey to Invercargill
My 2019 journey starts off a long way from Invercargill … in Liverpool, England.
I’m playing for the Spar Proteas in the Quad Series against the Diamonds, Ferns and Roses.
We had a terrible game against the Diamonds, losing with double digit goals but definitely redeemed ourselves when we beat the current Commonwealth Games champions by three goals. We ended the Quad Series with a nail-biting game against the Ferns, losing in extra extra time.
Given the results from the series, I think the netball world can look forward to the World Cup in July with plenty of excited anticipation. It’s shaping up to be an absolute humdinger of a tournament.
I returned to the Deep South at the end of January to continue the last bit of preseason with the Steel girls. One of my first 'roadtrips' was to Bluff – a windy experience but beautiful scenery with some great cafe food and company.
On our way to Ashburton for our first preseason games against the Tactix, I got a glimpse of a few places such as Gore, Clinton, the Moeraki Boulders, Riverstone Castle and, of course, Ashburton. It’s all a new adventure for me and I love exploring new places.
Recently we had our usual preseason tournament in Otaki where we won two of our three games. There’s definitely lots of build-ons and improvements which emerged but I’m confident the right connections and movements will come once we hit the court for our first game against the Stars.
