National downhill champs for Bluff

National downhill champs for Bluff

Top quality sporting action comes to Bluff early in the New Year with confirmation that the first round of the Mountain Bike New Zealand National Series Downhill Champs will take place on Bluff Hill on Sunday 12 January.

Up to around 140 competitors along with their support crews are expected to descend on the town with a high calibre of competitor expected as they chase the national title. With the second round scheduled at Coronet Peak just one week later it gives competitors from all over the country the opportunity to travel to the south of the country for two events in quick succession.

The quality of tracks in the Bluff Hill area will ensure a spectacle and the Southland Mountain Bike Club are encouraging spectators to come along and watch some of the country’s best compete. There are some great viewing spots and a few jumps on the course. Best viewing can be accessed from the top of the hill by the cell tower and off the access road at the top of the straight on the hill.

Practice will be held to determine seedings while in competition riders will be released every thirty seconds. The fastest rider goes to the hot seat until knocked off by a competitor beating their time.

Organisers are also keen to hear from anyone interested in volunteering on the day to help with the event.

Information as the champs draw near will be available on the Southland Mountain Bike Club Facebook page.
