Next week is the annual NZ Secondary Schools Winter Tournament week.

Thirteen of the Southland Secondary Schools have teams and individuals involved in events around NZ during the week.

Tournaments being hosted in Invercargill include the Boys Linwood Football Tournament starting next Monday.

There will be seven local teams competing. A South Island Girls Hockey Tournament will be hosted in Invercargill, as well as a Zone 4 Senior Basketball tournament where four local schools have teams involved.

The combination of these three tournaments in Invercargill will see around 80 teams participating here during the week.

SI Netball is being hosted in Dunedin this year. Nine Southland schools will be attending and playing over three grades.

Other events that have attracted good representation from Southland schools will be the U15 Boys Coed Rugby tournament in Queenstown, where six Southland schools are entered.

Ten Southland School hockey teams will be playing in six different hockey tournaments around the South Island.

Football has seen an increase in Southland teams entered in tournaments this year with 12 teams competing in three different tournaments, compared to nine last year.

Wakatipu HS will be hoping to win back to back titles at the SI Ice Hockey tournament in Dunedin.

Southland Girls have cemented their spot at the Top 4 NZ Girls Rugby Tournament by beating Christchurch Girls over the weekend to claim the top SI team title.

They will play in the Top 4 tournament in Palmerston North at the end of next week.

Southland will be well represented at all these events and we look forward to following the progress of the teams during the week .

To check on results you can go on the NZ Secondary School sport website www.nzsssc.org.nz . This will have links to the various national sports websites who will feature daily results .
